Definicja
Pochodną funkcji f(x) w punkcie x0 nazywamy:
f ′ ( x 0 ) = lim h → 0 f ( x 0 + h ) − f ( x 0 ) h {\displaystyle f'(x_{0})=\lim _{h\rightarrow 0}{\frac {f(x_{0}+h)-f(x_{0})}{h}}}
Spotyka się również inne oznaczenia pochodnej funkcji:
f ′ ( x 0 ) = d f d x | x 0 = d y d x | x 0 = d d x f | x 0 = f ˙ ( x 0 ) {\displaystyle f'(x_{0})=\left.{\frac {df}{dx}}\right|_{x_{0}}=\left.{\frac {dy}{dx}}\right|_{x_{0}}=\left.{\frac {d}{dx}}f\right|_{x_{0}}={\dot {f}}(x_{0})}
Jeżli założymy, że y = a x + b {\displaystyle y=ax+b\,} jest równaniem prostej stycznej do wykresu funkcji f, to wartość pochodnej interpretujemy jako współczynnik kierunkowy a {\displaystyle a\,} prostej stycznej do wykresu funkcji w punkcie ( x 0 , f ( x 0 ) ) {\displaystyle {\Big (}x_{0},f(x_{0}){\Big )}} . Możemy zatem zapisać:
f ′ ( x 0 ) = tan α {\displaystyle f'(x_{0})=\tan \alpha \,} , gdzie α {\displaystyle \alpha } to kąt zawarty pomiędzy styczną do wykresu funkcji a półosią x.
W praktyce przy liczeniu pochodnej korzystać będziemy z tablic i twierdzeń przedstawionych poniżej. Czasami jednak w trudniejszych przypadkach możemy stanąć przed koniecznością skorzystania z definicji. W celu udowodnienia twierdzeń o pochodnych także konieczne będzie skorzystanie bezpośrednio z definicji.

f i
g :
[ f + g ] ′ ( x ) = f ′ ( x ) + g ′ ( x ) {\displaystyle {\Big [}f+g{\Big ]}'(x)=f'(x)+g'(x)}
Przykład
y = x 2 + x {\displaystyle y=x^{2}+x} y ′ = [ x 2 + x ] ′ {\displaystyle y'=[x^{2}+x]'} y ′ = [ x 2 ] ′ + [ x ] ′ {\displaystyle y'=[x^{2}]'+[x]'} y ′ = 2 x + 1 {\displaystyle y'=2x+1}

f i
g :
[ f ⋅ g ] ′ ( x ) = f ′ ( x ) ⋅ g ( x ) + f ( x ) ⋅ g ′ ( x ) {\displaystyle {\Big [}f\cdot g{\Big ]}'(x)=f'(x)\cdot g(x)+f(x)\cdot g'(x)}
Jeżeli liczymy pochodną iloczynu trzech i więcej funkcji, powyższe twierdzenie należy zastosować iteracyjnie, tzn.
[ f ( x ) ⋅ g ( x ) ⋅ h ( x ) ⋅ m ( x ) ] ′ = {\displaystyle {\Bigg [}f(x)\cdot g(x)\cdot h(x)\cdot m(x){\Bigg ]}'=}
iloczyn wielu funkcji traktujemy jako iloczyn dwu prostszych funkcji. Następnie korzystamy ze znanego wzoru na pochodną iloczynu dwu funkcji.
= f ′ ( x ) ⋅ g ( x ) ⋅ h ( x ) ⋅ m ( x ) + f ( x ) ⋅ [ g ( x ) ⋅ h ( x ) ⋅ m ( x ) ] ′ = {\displaystyle =f'(x)\cdot g(x)\cdot h(x)\cdot m(x)\ +\ f(x)\cdot {\Big [}g(x)\cdot h(x)\cdot m(x){\Big ]}'=}
Powyższy krok powtarzamy tak długo, aż pod znakiem pochodnej nie będzie więcej niż dwie funkcje.
= f ′ ( x ) ⋅ g ( x ) ⋅ h ( x ) ⋅ m ( x ) + f ( x ) ⋅ [ g ′ ( x ) ⋅ h ( x ) ⋅ m ( x ) + g ( x ) ⋅ [ h ( x ) ⋅ m ( x ) ] ′ ] = {\displaystyle =f'(x)\cdot g(x)\cdot h(x)\cdot m(x)\ +\ f(x)\cdot {\Bigg [}g'(x)\cdot h(x)\cdot m(x)+g(x)\cdot {\Big [}h(x)\cdot m(x){\Big ]}'{\Bigg ]}=}
Ostatecznie otrzymujemy długi, aczkolwiek prosty w wykorzystaniu wzór końcowy:
= f ′ ( x ) ⋅ g ( x ) ⋅ h ( x ) ⋅ m ( x ) + f ( x ) ⋅ [ g ′ ( x ) ⋅ h ( x ) ⋅ m ( x ) + g ( x ) ⋅ [ h ′ ( x ) ⋅ m ( x ) + h ( x ) ⋅ m ′ ( x ) ] ] = {\displaystyle =f'(x)\cdot g(x)\cdot h(x)\cdot m(x)\ +\ f(x)\cdot {\Bigg [}g'(x)\cdot h(x)\cdot m(x)+g(x)\cdot {\Big [}h'(x)\cdot m(x)+h(x)\cdot m'(x){\Big ]}{\Bigg ]}=}

[ f ( x ) g ( x ) ] ′ = f ′ ( x ) ⋅ g ( x ) − f ( x ) ⋅ g ′ ( x ) g 2 ( x ) {\displaystyle \left[{\frac {f(x)}{g(x)}}\right]'={\frac {f'(x)\cdot g(x)-f(x)\cdot g'(x)}{g^{2}(x)}}}
Przykład
y = sin x x {\displaystyle y={\frac {\sin x}{x}}} y ′ = ( cos x ⋅ x ) − ( sin x ⋅ 1 ) x 2 {\displaystyle y'={\frac {(\cos x\cdot x)-(\sin x\cdot 1)}{x^{2}}}}
